Wordsmith Challenge

WELCOME TO THE SHOWDOWN POETRY CHALLENGE INFO PAGE!

The Showdown in Chinatown is adding a brand new, uniquely creative and diverse layer to the event...
LIVE spokenword performances between films, followed by:

A Showdown Open Mic Challenge! (Hosted by Slam Poet Champion Bridget Gray)

This is a call for ALL writers, performance poets, lyricists, slammers, emcees, etc... to participate in the Showdown fun!

For 7 years Showdown in Chinatown has offered a safe and challenging space for anyone who wanted to explore and develop the art of film making and showcase their work on the big screen. Now Showdown is extending that space to those who want to use a microphone as their tool, instead of a camera!

Here is the twist...

We are encouraging all of you writers to take the same criteria as the filmmakers and apply it to a poem, song, monologue, rap, etc... and then perform it LIVE, on stage, the same night of the Showdown film challenge.

HERE IS YOUR OPEN MIC CHALLENGE :

1.) Write a poem, monologue, rhyme, performance piece, song, script or whatever kind of original written work
you want to share, that is 4 minutes or less.
2.) Do your best to include the line of dialogue & props
3.) Sign-up the night of the event and be ready to perform your piece on the mic for the always amazing
mix of creative people that regularly attends the Showdown film challenge. That's it!

*Reminder: This is not a slam competition, so you won't be penalized for anything. That means you can go for it! Sing your poem. Make us laugh through your tears. Set your imagination free! Write whatever inspires you and most importantly, enjoy the process of creating and performing something new! We really just want you to have great place to perform your own written work and connect with other artists in the industry and community at large.

There are only 8 open mic slots available. Sign-up sheet will be available at 7:00 p.m. at Nextdoor the night of the event.  Special guests will perform in between films. Open Mic will then take place at the Showdown after party at thirtyninehotel, immediately following the film challenge.

This is about to take the art scene in Chinatown Honolulu to another level.
